Reliable golf clothing for every layer

Updated 6.10.2026

Your clothing has to handle both the weather and your swing

A round of golf lasts several hours, and the weather can change a lot in that time: the morning may be chilly and dewy, midday warm, and by the afternoon the wind is blowing across the open fairway. Your swing needs free movement from your shoulders to your hips, so any tight or bulky layer shows straight away in your shot. The wrong layers mean sweating or a stiff swing, while the right ones keep you comfortable and moving freely for the whole round, from the first tee to the final green.

That is why we have put together a complete, practical set on this page: one reliable garment for each layer. With these garments you cannot go wrong, whether you are playing a quick nine holes or an all-day tournament. You do not need to compare dozens of options or guess whether the garments work together. Here is a set in which every layer is designed to work with the next.

Every layer does its own job

The Zero Layer moves sweat away from your skin, the Base Layer brings warmth to a chilly early tee time, the Mid Layer adds warmth before the round and between holes, and the Shell Layer protects you from wind and rain. Merino and Airbase take care of moisture and warmth, so you can focus on your game.

Four layers, one complete set

Layering is the answer to dressing for golf. We chose one reliable garment for each layer that works at both extremes of a round: a chilly early start and a warm afternoon. Together they make up the Svala AIR System™ layering system, in which every layer does its own job. You do not always need every layer. On a warm round, a thin layer next to your skin is enough, while for a chilly morning or rain you bring more.

Zero Layer – Next-to-skin performance

Walking all 18 holes and every swing make you perspire, even when the morning feels cool. Worn next to the skin, the Airbase-mesh shirt keeps your skin dry throughout the round. Airbase is made from 100 % polypropylene, which absorbs no moisture at all but transfers sweat away from the skin to the next layer.

The loops in the 120 g/m² 3D-mesh knit breathe and trap air, forming a thin layer against the skin: it cools you during your swing and retains warmth when you stand still. Airbase is thin and stretchy, so it sits discreetly beneath a polo shirt without restricting your range of movement. Silver ion treatment keeps the base layers fresh for several rounds with airing alone.

"When I play golf, it is important to me that my clothing performs well and does not need adjusting. I have long worn the Airbase mesh T-shirt or sleeveless version under technical polo shirts throughout the season, because it prevents a damp polo shirt from sticking to my skin in warm weather. In autumn, I wear the same mesh under my golf trousers, which provides just enough extra insulation when the weather calls for it, without being too warm."

Base Layer – Temperature regulation

On a chilly morning or during an autumn round, your body does not generate enough heat on its own, so you need a layer that provides warmth. Wear a thin, warm merino wool shirt over Airbase. Merino regulates temperature in both directions: it does not feel stifling when the sun rises and the temperature climbs as the round progresses, but it also keeps you from feeling cold while waiting on the fairway. It keeps you warm even when damp with sweat, which is crucial during a long round when the weather can change several times.

Airbase and a thin merino wool shirt are the best layering combination for golfers: the mesh layer wicks moisture away from the skin, while the merino provides warmth. Together, they keep you dry and warm from the first tee to the final green.

Mid Layer – Thermal insulation

On the chilliest mornings, two layers are not enough. However, the range of movement golf requires does not allow for a thick mid-layer, so you add extra warmth when it does not interfere with play: while waiting on the tee, between holes or at the start of the round before your first shot.

Svala’s Polartec® Alpha™ hoodie is ideal for this. It is lightweight and packable, so you can carry it with you, pull it on quickly whenever play stops and take it off just as quickly before your swing. The hoodie is breathable, so it will not feel stuffy even if you wear it for the whole round.

Shell Layer – Weather protection

The outermost layer completes your layering system: a lightweight wind- and waterproof shell. Wind and sudden showers can catch you off guard on an open fairway, so the shell’s role is to block the wind and keep rain out, preventing warm air trapped in the lower layers from escaping.

In heavy rain, it is advisable to keep the shell on even during swings, so choose a sufficiently loose fit that does not restrict shoulder and hip rotation. Svala’s own shell layer, Ventile, will be launched in autumn 2026. The shell jacket’s relaxed cut makes it suitable for wearing throughout the round.

You do not need everything at once – start here

The system works best when you choose your layers to suit the length of your round and the weather, but you do not need to buy everything at once or replace your wardrobe. The AIR System™ also works with the clothes you already own. If you are starting from scratch, start with what you wear next to your skin: it is the most important part of the whole system. The most reliable foundation for a golfer is an Airbase mesh shirt next to the skin with a thin merino layer over it. On top of these, add a warm mid-layer and a shell to suit the round and the weather.

If you already have one of the layers sorted, buy only what is missing:

  • Do you already have a thin merino layer? Complement it with Airbase: wear the mesh shirt next to your skin under the merino, so you stay dry for the whole round and do not get cold on a chilly morning.
  • Are your next-to-skin and warm layers already sorted? For cooler weather, add the lightweight, packable Polartec® Alpha™ hoodie, which you can quickly put on and take off between holes.
  • Do you already have a golf jacket? There is no need to replace it. Make sure it is breathable and has enough room underneath for your other layers.

This way you can build a practical system at your own pace. Although we put these layers together for golf, they will not sit unused in your wardrobe: the same layers also work for other outdoor activities and change seasons with you.
