How to take your measurements

All you need is a tape measure and two measurements. That way, you'll get your size right first time.

Before you start
For the most accurate result, measure yourself in your underwear. No tape measure? Use a piece of string and a ruler.

B. Waist
Measure your waist at its narrowest point. Don't hold your breath.

C. Hips
Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your hips.

Two tips
The most reliable way to find your size is to measure yourself rather than guess from what you've bought before. If you need to, ask someone to help – it makes measuring easier.

Remember that these are body measurements, so ideally measure yourself in your underwear. Use your measurements together with your height and weight to find the size that fits you best.

“In cold weather, I put my Nordic Terry on as soon as I set off. It comes along on every trip, at least in my backpack. A brilliant layer to pull on during breaks too.”

Nordic Terry Wool – mid-layer bottoms you forget you are wearing

Men's Nordic Terry Wool 400 mid-layer bottoms are designed for those moments when your body no longer produces enough heat on its own: when you slow down or stop altogether, you need a layer that provides warmth. The 400 g/m² terry knit addresses this with its two surfaces: the looped surface retains heat and moves moisture away from the skin, while the smooth outer surface makes the bottoms comfortable and resistant to wear. The material feels soft and stretchy without restricting movement, while still regulating temperature.

The Nordic Terry Wool merino wool blend knit is a natural alternative to conventional fleece. Merino wool keeps you warm even when damp, so you do not feel cold even if the bottoms become wet with perspiration. No cold fabric clinging to your legs or shivering when you stop. Just steady warmth that lets you focus on what you are doing.

Merino wool is naturally antibacterial, so when you take the bottoms off in the evening, you are not greeted by the familiar smell of sweat. Instead, they feel as fresh as when you put them on in the morning. You can freshen them up simply by airing them, making them suitable for trips lasting several days.

Men's Nordic Terry Wool 400 mid-layer bottoms come with a 100-day satisfaction guarantee. We wanted to give you time to wear the bottoms: use the product normally for 100 days. If for any reason you are not satisfied with the product, you will receive your money back.

Nordic Terry Wool 400 mid-layer bottoms for every outdoor situation

The elasticated waistband with the Svala logo keeps the bottoms in place as you move, so you do not have to keep pulling them up. You can squat, raise your leg or take a long stride, and the bottoms move with you rather than restricting your movement. The crotch gusset provides a full range of motion, and the close fit never feels uncomfortable or tight. Ribbed cuffs keep the legs in place under other layers. All seams are flatlock seams that do not chafe the skin, even with repeated wear.

In the Svala AIR System™ layering system, these bottoms are the Mid Layer, an insulating mid-layer worn over a moisture-wicking Zero Layer, such as Original Airbase 120 mesh bottoms, and a temperature-regulating Base Layer, such as Merino Extreme bottoms. The mid-layer bottoms also work on their own, directly against the skin without a layer underneath, when the temperature or activity does not require the full layering system. Add a protective Shell Layer on the outside when the weather calls for it.

The designer's thoughts

“With mid-layer bottoms, the waistband and cuffs are crucial, because they determine whether the bottoms stay in place all day without needing to be pulled up. I wanted an elasticated waistband that holds the bottoms securely in place during movement without feeling tight when you are still, and cuffs that stay in place under other layers without rolling up. The terry knit provides warmth and breathability, and the merino wool makes these bottoms something you want to wear indoors too.”

Ninni Pohto, Svala designer

A material refined over years

The terry structure of the Nordic Terry Wool knit is the result of years of development at Svala and a natural alternative to conventional fleece. The looped inner surface traps air and warmth against the skin and moves moisture away from it. The smooth outer surface makes the fabric comfortable and resistant to wear. In practice, this means the bottoms keep you warm even when damp, and cold winds do not chill you to the bone even after long periods of standing still.

Merino wool naturally offers excellent heat retention and moisture transport properties. Its natural antibacterial properties help prevent unpleasant odours, so the bottoms can often be freshened up by airing rather than washing. You can therefore pack one mid-layer for your trip instead of several. This is a significant advantage when washing facilities may not be available.

Nordic Terry Wool mid-layer bottoms work exceptionally well as an insulating mid-layer in a layering system for the coldest weather, or on their own on milder days. Within a temperature range of -30 °C – +15 °C, the bottoms keep you warm even when you alternate between activity and standing still.

Men's Nordic Terry Wool 400 mid-layer bottoms are made from 70% mulesing-free merino wool and 30% polyamide, which adds durability and structure. The yarn is OEKO-TEX 100 certified, guaranteeing its safety in contact with the skin. The bottoms are designed and made at Svala's factory in Kärsämäki, Finland, with skills refined over decades.

Developed in Finland for Finnish weather

Clothing in the Nordic Terry Wool range is suitable for almost every outdoor activity from autumn to spring. Staying warm no longer depends on having the right kit.

Svala's merino products have been developed in Finland and tested in professional use for decades. This means the garment has been put to the test by people who give their clothing no easy treatment: during long work shifts, week-long wilderness trips and in wet and cold conditions where your kit determines how comfortable your day will be. If the bottoms have stood up to their use, they will stand up to yours too.

Frequently asked questions about the product

How do Nordic Terry Wool 400 mid-layer bottoms differ from a standard fleece mid-layer?

Nordic Terry Wool 400 mid-layer bottoms differ from a standard fleece mid-layer in both material and construction. Conventional fleece is usually entirely synthetic, whereas the terry structure of the Nordic Terry Wool knit is 70% mulesing-free merino wool and 30% polyamide. The looped surface of Nordic Terry Wool traps warmth and moves moisture away from your skin, while the smooth outer surface keeps the fabric comfortable and hard-wearing. Merino wool keeps you warm even when damp and stays fresh without constant washing, unlike many synthetic fleece materials, which lose insulation when they get wet and soon start to smell. You can freshen up Nordic Terry Wool mid-layer bottoms simply by airing them, so you can take them on longer trips without access to washing facilities.

Can I wear the mid-layer bottoms directly against my skin, without a layer underneath?

Yes. The mid-layer bottoms are designed to be worn on their own too, when the temperature or your activity doesn't call for full layering. The flatlock seams lie flat and won't rub your skin, even with repeated wear. If you sweat a lot or are on the move for a long time, you'll get better moisture wicking by wearing a moisture-wicking first layer underneath – Airbase – which moves moisture from your skin to the next layer.

What's the difference between the men's Nordic Terry Wool 400 trousers and the men's Nordic Terry Wool 400 mid-layer bottoms?

Both are made from the same warming Nordic Terry Wool terry knit, but they are designed for different uses. The Nordic Terry Wool 400 trousers are designed for everyday wear: they have pockets and work on their own, whether you're outdoors or relaxing at home. The Nordic Terry Wool 400 mid-layer bottoms, on the other hand, are a mid-layer worn beneath other clothes as part of your layering.

Choose the Nordic Terry Wool 400 trousers if you want to wear them at home or for leisure activities, for example. Choose the Nordic Terry Wool 400 mid-layer bottoms if you want warming mid-layer bottoms to wear with your other layers.
