How to take your measurements

All you need is a tape measure and two measurements. That way, you'll get your size right first time.

Before you start
For the most accurate result, measure yourself in your underwear. No tape measure? Use a piece of string and a ruler.

B. Waist
Measure your waist at its narrowest point. Don't hold your breath.

C. Hips

Two tips
The most reliable way to find your size is to measure yourself rather than guess from what you've bought before. If you need to, ask someone to help – it makes measuring easier.

Remember that these are body measurements, so ideally measure yourself in your underwear. Use your measurements together with your height and weight to find the size that fits you best.

“Horses need to be cared for and exercised all year round, whatever the weather. I value functional clothing that keeps me dry and warm during everyday chores – and looks good too! That’s why I wear my Airbase and Pääsky sets every day, summer and winter.”

Svala Signature – soft merino for every day

The women's Svala Signature Pääsky 200 base layer bottoms answer one of the age-old questions of dressing: how to stay warm and comfortable as your body warms up and cools down during the day. Merino wool is nature's own smart material. It keeps you warm even when it's slightly damp and keeps your body temperature steady, whether it's a cool morning or a warm afternoon.

The secret is the merino wool itself. Wool fibres hold warmth, breathe naturally and let moisture evaporate gradually from your skin, instead of letting the cold chill you to the bone. The knit feels soft and light on your skin, almost as if you weren't wearing the bottoms at all, yet the warmth lasts all day.

Merino wool is naturally odour-resistant, so when you take the bottoms off in the afternoon, you're not greeted by that familiar stale base layer smell. They still feel fresh. On long trips, simply airing them is often enough to freshen them up, which is a big advantage when washing isn't an option.

Svala Signature Pääsky 200 base layer bottoms come with a 100-day satisfaction guarantee. We want to give you time to try them properly: wear them as you normally would for 100 days. If you're not happy with them for any reason, you'll get your money back.

Outdoor-tested Svala Signature Pääsky 200 base layer bottoms for any situation

The close-fitting but stretchy merino knit moves with you and feels soft against your skin. Squat, lift your leg or take a long stride, and the bottoms follow your movements instead of stretching or holding you back. They feel like part of your body, not something on top of it. All seams are flatlock seams that lie flat and won't rub your skin, even with repeated wear.

The high waist is the heart of these bottoms. It covers your lower back and keeps it warm, even when your top rides up or your back would otherwise be exposed as you bend over. Inside the folded waistband is a soft elastic band, with merino wool over it against your skin: no hard elastic against your belly, and no red marks in the evening. This matters especially if you have sensitive skin.

The slim legs make these bottoms ideal for wearing under shell clothing and outdoor trousers. The legs don't bunch up or twist, so you can pull on your outer trousers without having to tug the layers down or up. Merino wool keeps your legs warm even when you're sitting at a rest stop with a hot drink in your hand or waiting in one place.

The Pääsky swallow pattern brings something to a base layer that technical clothing rarely offers: good looks. The swallow is a sign of summer, a bird that returns as the days get lighter and nature wakes up. The pattern is a reminder of a light summer morning and the freedom to move outdoors.

Pair the bottoms with a top from the same collection, the Svala Signature Pääsky 200 zip-neck top, to keep your whole body warm without compromising on style or softness.

Thoughts from the designer

“The Pääsky pattern grew out of the idea of a Finnish summer, freedom and being out in nature. The swallow has always been a sign that summer is coming and a new season is starting, and it's also Svala's own symbol, as ‘svala’ means swallow in Swedish. I wanted to design base layer bottoms that feel good against the skin and that you can rely on all year round. Soft merino wool, a carefully thought-out fit and a timeless pattern make the bottoms just as good for hiking as for the cottage and everyday life.”

Ninni Pohto, designer at Svala

Merino wool: a naturally smart material

The Svala Signature Pääsky 200 base layer bottoms are made from 100% mulesing-free merino wool. Merino wool is one of nature's best materials for regulating temperature: it holds warmth even when damp, breathes naturally and keeps your body temperature steady without leaving your skin damp or cold.

You can wear the bottoms all year round, because merino wool keeps you warm when it's cool and breathes when it's warm. The thin, stretchy knit works under your clothes in cool weather and as a light foundation layer in the warmer months. Svala Signature works very well as a first layer in freezing weather or as a second layer over Svala Airbase mesh bottoms. In temperatures from −30 °C to +15 °C, the bottoms keep you warm even when you alternate between activity and rest.

Long-fibre merino wool doesn't itch like ordinary wool, so the bottoms feel soft and comfortable on your skin, even when you wear them for long periods. This matters most in a layer that sits against your skin all day.

Merino wool is naturally odour-resistant, so the bottoms stay fresh for longer, and airing them after use lets you go longer between washes. That means you can pack one pair for a trip instead of five.

The materials are OEKO-TEX 100 certified, which guarantees the product is safe against your skin. The bottoms are designed and made at the Svala factory in Kärsämäki, Finland, with skills honed over decades.

Frequently asked questions about the product

How do Pääsky base layer bottoms differ from Merino Extreme base layer bottoms?

Pääsky base layer bottoms and Merino Extreme base layer bottoms meet different needs.
Pääsky base layer bottoms are made from 100% merino wool. They are soft, stretchy and versatile, and work both as an under layer and as a light everyday layer all year round. The Pääsky pattern makes them a beautiful pair of bottoms that work just as well on a hike as in everyday life.

Merino Extreme base layer bottoms have a double-layer construction in which the polypropylene on the inside wicks moisture away from your skin more efficiently. They are designed especially for hard frost and demanding use that makes you sweat.

Choose Pääsky if you want a soft, versatile merino base layer for everyday life and leisure. Choose Merino Extreme if you're active in especially cold conditions or at high intensity, where moisture wicking plays a crucial role.

Can Pääsky base layer bottoms be machine washed?

We recommend washing the bottoms on your washing machine's wool or delicates cycle at 30 °C with a wool detergent. Avoid fabric softener. Use a laundry bag and only wash soft clothes in the same load, so the bottoms keep their shape and pattern for a long time. After washing, drying them flat is best.

Will the Pääsky pattern fade or wear in the wash?

No, because the pattern is created using a jacquard technique and is made of yarns in different colours.
You can help preserve the colours by washing the bottoms according to our care instructions.

Do Pääsky base layer bottoms pill?

The Pääsky knit pills only a little. Constant rubbing can still cause some pilling and wear over time in the areas under the most strain, such as the thighs and knees. The best way to prevent pilling is to avoid unnecessary rubbing and wash the bottoms only when needed. When you do wash them, turn them inside out, use a liquid wool detergent and don't overfill the machine – this keeps the knit smooth for longer.

If pills do form on the surface, you can remove them easily and gently with a fabric comb.

Is 100% merino wool warm enough for hard frost without a double-layer construction?

Yes, as part of your layering. Pääsky base layer bottoms keep you warm effectively as an under layer, and in hard frost they work best under shell garments or outdoor trousers, where the merino wool can do its job as insulation and the outer layer protects you from the wind.

If you're active at high intensity and sweat a lot, the double-layer Merino Extreme wicks moisture away from your skin more efficiently. But if you're looking for a soft, versatile merino base layer that works just as well on a frosty morning walk or run as in everyday life, Pääsky is the one for you.
