How to take your measurements

All you need is a tape measure and three measurements. That way, you'll get your size right first time.

Before you start
For the most accurate result, measure yourself in your underwear. No tape measure? Use a piece of string and a ruler.

A. Chest
Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your chest. Keep the tape level – not too tight and not too loose.

B. Waist
Measure your waist at its narrowest point. Don't hold your breath.

C. Hips
Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your hips.

Two tips
The most reliable way to find your size is to measure yourself rather than guess from what you've bought before. If you need to, ask someone to help – it makes measuring easier.

Remember that these are body measurements, so ideally measure yourself in your underwear. Use your measurements together with your height and weight to find the size that fits you best.

“In cold weather, I put my Nordic Terry on as soon as I set off. It comes along on every trip, at least in my backpack. A brilliant layer to pull on during breaks too.”

Nordic Terry Wool – the shirt you forget you are wearing

The men's Nordic Terry Wool 400 Zip-neck shirt is designed for moments when your body no longer generates enough heat on its own: when you slow down or stop altogether, you need a layer that provides warmth. The 400 g/m² terry knit addresses this with its two surfaces: the looped inner surface traps warmth and moves moisture away from the skin, while the smooth outer surface makes the fabric comfortable and resistant to wear. The fabric feels soft and stretchy and does not restrict movement, while still regulating temperature.

The merino wool blend Nordic Terry Wool shirt is a natural alternative to conventional fleece. Merino wool provides warmth even when damp, so you will not feel cold even if the shirt becomes wet with sweat. No cold shirt clinging to your back or shivering when you stop. Just steady warmth that lets you focus on what you are doing.

The high collar is a detail you only notice when the wind picks up: it protects your neck and chin when the weather turns colder. The zipped front opening lets you adjust the shirt: open it as your body warms up and close it as the weather cools. You can regulate your temperature with a single movement, without taking the shirt off, making it easy to adapt to changes in body temperature.

Merino wool is naturally antibacterial, so when you take the shirt off in the evening, you are not greeted by the familiar smell of sweat. Instead, the shirt feels as fresh as it did when you put it on in the morning. You can freshen it up simply by airing it, making it suitable for trips lasting several days.

The men's Nordic Terry Wool 400 Zip-neck shirt comes with a 100-day satisfaction guarantee. We wanted to give you time to wear the shirt: use it normally for 100 days. If you are not satisfied with the product for any reason, you will receive your money back.

The Nordic Terry Wool 400 Zip-neck shirt for every outdoor situation

The raglan sleeves follow every movement of your arms. You can raise your arms, reach out and lean forwards, and the shirt moves with you rather than restricting you. The curved hem is longer at the back, keeping your back covered and protecting your lower back from the cold when you bend or reach. The zipped stand collar and windproof front opening protect your neck and keep cold air out. All seams are flatlock seams that do not chafe your skin, even with repeated wear.

In the Svala AIR System™ layering system, this shirt is the Mid Layer, an insulating mid-layer worn over a moisture-wicking Zero Layer, such as the Original Airbase 120 mesh shirt, and a temperature-regulating Base Layer, such as the Merino Extreme shirt. The shirt also works on its own, directly against the skin without a layer underneath, when the temperature or activity does not call for full layering. Add a weather-protective Shell Layer on top when conditions require it.

The designer's thoughts

“The collar and zip are what matter in a Zip-neck shirt. I wanted a collar high enough to protect without feeling tight, and a zip that lets you regulate warmth without taking the shirt off, even as your activity level changes. The terry knit provides warmth and breathability, and the merino wool makes this a shirt you want to keep wearing indoors, too.”

Ninni Pohto, Svala designer

A fabric refined over years

The terry structure of the Nordic Terry Wool knit is the result of years of development at Svala and a natural alternative to conventional fleece. The looped inner surface traps air and warmth against the skin and moves moisture away from it. The smooth outer surface completes the structure and increases the fabric's resistance to wear. In practice, this means the shirt provides warmth even when damp, and the cold wind does not chill you to the bone when you stop for a break.

Merino wool naturally offers excellent heat retention and moisture transport. Its natural antibacterial properties help prevent unpleasant odours, and the shirt can often be freshened up by airing rather than washing. You can therefore pack one mid-layer for your trip instead of several. This is a significant advantage on longer trips where washing facilities may not be available.

The Nordic Terry Wool shirt works extremely well as a mid-layer in the coldest conditions or as an outer layer on milder, dry days. In temperatures from -30 °C – +15 °C, the shirt keeps you warm even when you alternate between activity and standing still.

The men's Nordic Terry Wool 400 Zip-neck shirt is made from 70% mulesing-free merino wool and 30% polyamide, which adds durability and structure. The yarn is OEKO-TEX 100 certified, ensuring it is safe against the skin. The shirt is designed and manufactured at Svala's factory in Kärsämäki, Finland, using skills refined over decades.

Developed in Finland for Finnish weather

Are you standing on the sidelines cheering at a junior football match? Hiking to a wilderness shelter with a packed lunch? Walking your dog at a pace that varies between brisk walking and stops for sniffing? Nordic Terry Wool is made for these moments.

Garments in the Nordic Terry Wool range are suitable for almost every outdoor activity from autumn to spring. Staying warm is no longer a question of having the right kit.

These are the situations where the Nordic Terry Wool 400 Zip-neck shirt is at its best:

  • On a work shift
  • On outings and hikes
  • Out for a walk or run
  • Cycling
  • On the ski trail

Frequently asked questions about the product

How does the Nordic Terry Wool 400 zip-neck shirt differ from a standard fleece mid-layer?

The Nordic Terry Wool 400 zip-neck shirt differs from a standard fleece mid-layer in both material and construction. Conventional fleece is usually entirely synthetic, whereas the terry structure of the Nordic Terry Wool knit is 70% mulesing-free merino wool and 30% polyamide. The looped surface of Nordic Terry Wool traps warmth and moves moisture away from your skin, while the smooth outer surface keeps the fabric comfortable and hard-wearing.

Merino wool keeps you warm even when damp and stays fresh without constant washing, unlike many synthetic fleece materials, which lose insulation when they get wet and soon start to smell. You can freshen up the Nordic Terry Wool shirt simply by airing it, so you can take it on longer trips without access to washing facilities.

Can I wear the shirt directly against my skin, without a layer underneath?

Yes. The shirt is designed to work on its own too, when the temperature or your activity doesn't call for full layering. The flatlock seams lie flat and won't rub your skin, even with repeated wear. If you sweat a lot or are on the move for a long time, everything works best when you wear a first layer underneath that moves moisture away from your skin to the next layer.

Is the shirt also suitable for warmer weather, or is it only for winter?

The shirt is designed for autumn, winter and spring. It works from −30 °C all the way up to +15 °C, so it's not just for freezing weather. Thanks to its terry structure, the material breathes, so the shirt works as a mid-layer even when the temperature changes from cool to warmer over the course of a day. In the coldest weather, wear it with other Svala AIR System™ layers, and on milder days it works on its own.
