How to take your measurements

All you need is a tape measure and three measurements. That way, you'll get your size right first time.

Before you start
For the most accurate result, measure yourself in your underwear. No tape measure? Use a piece of string and a ruler.

A. Chest
Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your chest. Keep the tape level – not too tight and not too loose.

B. Waist
Measure your waist at its narrowest point. Don't hold your breath.

C. Hips
Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your hips.

Two tips
The most reliable way to find your size is to measure yourself rather than guess from what you've bought before. If you need to, ask someone to help – it makes measuring easier.

Remember that these are body measurements, so ideally measure yourself in your underwear. Use your measurements together with your height and weight to find the size that fits you best.

“On wilderness trips, when I’m cooking fish or game over an open fire, I find wool better than a synthetic top.”

Louhi – a jumper you can wear all day

It's a crisp morning, so you pull on a cotton or acrylic jumper. Once you get moving, it soon starts to feel stuffy and your back gets damp. When you stop, your damp back turns cold, and by evening the jumper smells of sweat. Louhi solves all of this with merino wool.

Merino wool naturally regulates warmth and moisture. When the air cools, the wool keeps the warmth close to you, and when you pick up the pace, it breathes and moves moisture outwards. The stitches of the knit also trap air, which insulates you from the cold. That's why you can wear it from morning to evening. Wool stays warm even when damp, so you won't start to feel cold straight away, even if you work up a sweat on a climb or the evening turns misty.

Merino wool is also naturally odour-resistant. When you take the jumper off in the evening, you're not greeted by that familiar smell of sweat – it still feels fresh. Air it overnight and it's ready for another day in the morning.

The Louhi crew-neck jumper comes with a 100-day satisfaction guarantee. We want to give you time to try it properly: wear it as you normally would for 100 days. If you're not happy with it for any reason, you'll get your money back.

Tested outdoors: the Louhi jumper gives you room to move

Louhi has a regular fit and suits both men and women. It's neither tight nor baggy, and there's room for a layer underneath. On a raglan sleeve, the seam runs diagonally from the neckline to the underarm, so there's no seam on top of your shoulder to restrict your movement. You can raise your arms, reach up or turn to look behind you without the jumper holding you back. The front, back and sleeves are knitted to shape rather than cut from knitted fabric, so the jumper sits naturally on your body.

The round neckline doesn't feel tight around your neck. A shirt collar sits neatly over it, and under a jacket the neckline stays hidden. Rib-knit cuffs and hem stay in place and keep the wind out. There's a hanging loop at the back, so you can hang the jumper on a hook when you no longer need it.

Louhi comes in two colours: beige and dark blue. Beige is a light, warm shade that goes well with brown, olive green and off-white, for example. Against a dark outdoor jacket, it brings light to your outfit. Dark blue is a classic that goes with almost anything. Over a white shirt it looks smart, and with jeans or outdoor trousers it looks relaxed.

On a cool day, Louhi is enough on its own, and when it's colder, it's a warm layer under your jacket. In the Svala AIR System™, Louhi is part of the Mid Layer: the insulating layer that traps warm air between your layers when the cold increases or you're moving at a slower pace. Next to your skin, you wear the moisture-wicking Zero Layer, and in freezing weather a warming Base Layer over it, such as the Merino Extreme base layer set. In rain and wind, add a Shell Layer over Louhi to protect you from the weather.

Thoughts from the designer

“A crew neck is a knitwear classic that never goes out of fashion. We wanted to make a jumper that feels soft, keeps you warm and looks good, but also works outdoors. That's why we chose mulesing-free merino wool and raglan sleeves, which give you room to move. Louhi is made for both women and men, and you can wear it just as well outdoors as at work.”

Ninni Pohto, designer at Svala

Nature's own smart material

Louhi is knitted from 100% merino wool. Merino fibres are finer than ordinary wool fibres. A fine fibre bends against your skin, so the jumper prickles less at your neck and wrists than coarser wool. The fibre is naturally crimped and springy, so the jumper stretches as you move.

The merino wool in Louhi is mulesing-free. Mulesing is a procedure used mainly in Australia, in which wool-bearing skin is cut from around a merino sheep's tail end to stop flies laying eggs in the skin folds. It has not been done to the sheep that produced the wool for Louhi.

The knit is 7 gg (gauge). The number tells you how many needles the knitting machine has per inch: the higher the number, the finer the yarn and the denser the knit. Louhi has a medium gauge, so the knit is dense enough to insulate and thin enough to fit under a jacket without feeling bulky. If you'd prefer a thicker jumper with a collar you can open with a zip, take a look at the Niva zip-neck jumper.

The material is OEKO-TEX 100 certified, which guarantees the product is safe against your skin. The Louhi crew-neck jumper is knitted in Finland by Top-Knit from responsibly produced merino wool, with decades of experience behind it.

Developed in Finland for Finnish weather

Does frost crunch under your shoes when you head out in the morning? Do you stay on the jetty when everyone else has gone inside? Do you go straight from the market square to a forest trail in the same jumper? Louhi is made for moments like these.

Finnish autumn, winter and spring swing from sleet to hard frost, sometimes even on the same day. Louhi suits all kinds of outdoor activities and comes along in everyday life too, so your clothing no longer decides how much you enjoy being outdoors.

The Louhi crew-neck jumper is at its best:

  • Hiking and trekking
  • At the cottage
  • By the lean-to and campfire
  • Picking berries and mushrooms
  • Outdoors
  • Fishing and ice fishing
  • Everyday wear and at the office

Frequently asked questions about the product

Does merino wool itch?

Not for most people. Louhi is knitted from merino wool, which has finer fibres than ordinary wool. A fine fibre bends against your skin instead of prickling, which is why merino wool feels soft. Sensitive skin may still feel the fibres, especially around the neckline. Louhi is a Mid Layer, the insulating layer, so you usually wear a Zero Layer underneath, such as an Original Airbase 120 mesh shirt, and in freezing weather a Base Layer too, such as the Merino Extreme 200 base layer top. That way, the jumper isn't directly against your skin. If you have a sensitive neck, choose a zip-neck top underneath with a collar that covers your neck.

Which size should I choose in a unisex style?

Louhi is a unisex style, which means the same jumper is designed to fit both women and men. It has a regular fit: neither close-fitting nor loose. Compare your measurements with the size chart to find the right size for you. Measure yourself with a layer on, because you'll often wear one or two layers under Louhi. That way, the jumper fits well over your other layers and doesn't feel tight around your arms or waist.

Can I wear Louhi in freezing weather?

Yes, when you wear it with other layers. Louhi's temperature range is −30 °C to +15 °C as part of your layering. In freezing weather, wear a moisture-wicking Zero Layer and a warming Base Layer underneath, and a Shell Layer on top to protect you from wind and snow. Louhi traps air between the layers, and merino wool stays warm even when damp. The colder it is, or the longer you stand still, the more important a warm insulating layer becomes. In mild autumn or spring weather, Louhi may be enough on its own.
