Svala Signature – soft merino for every day
The women's Svala Signature Pääsky 200 zip-neck top answers one of the age-old questions of dressing: how to stay warm and comfortable as your body warms up and cools down during the day. Merino wool is nature's own smart material. It keeps you warm even when it's slightly damp and keeps your body temperature steady, whether it's a cool morning or a warm afternoon.
The secret is the merino wool itself. Wool fibres hold warmth, breathe naturally and let moisture evaporate gradually from your skin, instead of letting the cold chill you to the bone. The knit feels soft and light on your skin, almost as if you weren't wearing a top at all, yet the warmth lasts all day.
Merino wool is naturally odour-resistant, so when you take the top off in the afternoon, you're not greeted by that familiar stale base layer smell. It feels as fresh as when you put it on. On long trips, simply airing it is often enough to freshen it up, which is a big advantage when washing isn't an option.
The Svala Signature Pääsky 200 zip-neck top comes with a 100-day satisfaction guarantee. We want to give you time to try it properly: wear it as you normally would for 100 days. If you're not happy with it for any reason, you'll get your money back.
Outdoor-tested Svala Signature Pääsky 200 zip-neck top for any situation
The close-fitting but stretchy merino knit moves with you and feels soft against your skin. Raise your arms, reach or lean forwards, and the top follows your movements instead of stretching or holding you back. It feels like part of your body, not something on top of it.
The armhole seams are moved away from the shoulders. This gives you more freedom of movement, and there's nothing under your rucksack straps to chafe. All seams are flatlock seams that lie flat and won't rub your skin, even with repeated wear.
The high collar and zip set this top apart from an ordinary base layer. The collar protects your neck from wind and cold. Use the zip to open the collar when your heart rate rises, or close it when the weather turns colder. One small movement adapts the top to the moment, with no need to take layers off or put more on. The feminine fit sits close from neck to waist, so the top looks good and you can wear it without a jacket too.
The stretchy cuffs keep the long sleeves in place, so you don't have to pull them back down to your wrists when you put on a jacket or mid-layer. The slightly longer back hem gives your lower back extra protection when you bend or reach, so you don't have to keep tugging the top back into place or worry about your back getting cold.
The Pääsky swallow pattern brings something to a base layer that technical clothing rarely offers: good looks. The swallow is a sign of summer, a bird that returns as the days get lighter and nature wakes up. The pattern is a reminder of a light summer morning and the freedom to move outdoors.
Pair the zip-neck top with the base layer bottoms from the same collection to keep your whole body warm without compromising on style or softness.
Thoughts from the designer
“The Pääsky pattern grew out of the idea of a Finnish summer, freedom and being out in nature. The swallow has always been a sign that spring has arrived and a new season is starting, and it's also Svala's own symbol, as ‘svala’ means swallow in Swedish. With this top, I wanted to combine the natural comfort of merino wool with a practical zip neck that makes it easy to regulate your warmth in changing conditions. The feminine fit, longer back and high, protective collar make the top a versatile companion for hiking, outdoor activities and everyday wear.”

Merino wool: a naturally smart material
The Svala Signature Pääsky 200 zip-neck top is made from 100% mulesing-free merino wool. Merino wool is one of nature's best materials for regulating temperature: it holds warmth even when damp, breathes naturally and keeps your body temperature steady without leaving your skin damp or cold.
You can wear the top all year round, because merino wool keeps you warm when it's cool and breathes when it's warm. The thin, stretchy knit works under your clothes in cool weather and as a light foundation layer in the warmer months. Svala Signature Pääsky works very well as a first layer in freezing weather or as a second layer over a Svala Airbase mesh shirt. In temperatures from −30 °C to +15 °C, the top keeps you warm even when you alternate between activity and rest.
Long-fibre merino wool doesn't itch like ordinary wool, so the top feels soft and comfortable on your skin, even when you wear it for long periods. This matters most in a layer that sits against your skin all day.
Merino wool is naturally odour-resistant, so the top stays fresh for longer, and airing it after use lets you go longer between washes. That means you can pack one top for a trip instead of five.
The materials are OEKO-TEX 100 certified, which guarantees the product is safe against your skin. The top is designed and made at the Svala factory in Kärsämäki, Finland, with skills honed over decades.
