Reliable clothing for every layer of your cycle commute

Updated 8.10.2026

Start the working day dry

You rarely ride to work in the same weather twice. One person pedals three kilometres on a city bike in work clothes, another rides fifteen kilometres along the waterfront cycle path and showers on arrival, and a third lets an e-bike do some of the work. What they have in common is that the ride ends in a warm building and a working day. When you lock your bike and step into the lobby, your body usually keeps warming up for a while, and the sweat comes through just as you're due to sit down for your first meeting. In the afternoon you put the same clothes back on for the ride home, often in completely different weather from the morning.

On this page, we've put together one go-to garment for each layer for cycle commuters and explain which moment of the commute each one handles best. For other kinds of cycling we've built separate kits: go-to clothing for cyclists is put together for bike rides, go-to clothing for winter cycling for freezing winter mornings and slush, go-to clothing for mountain biking for the trail, where your back sweats under a hydration pack, and go-to clothing for bike touring for trips lasting several days.

One go-to garment for each layer

You don't need to compare dozens of options or guess whether the garments work together. Here is a set in which each layer is designed to work with the next. The Zero Layer wicks moisture away so you stay dry on the way and when you arrive, the Base Layer evens out warmth and moisture from a chilly morning to a warm ride home, the Mid Layer insulates on freezing mornings and the Shell Layer protects you from wind chill and showers. You can focus on the ride and the working day ahead.

Four layers, one set that works

On the commute, the same layers have to work both in the cool morning air and in the afternoon sun. They also have to survive a day on the coat rack. On a summer morning, one or two layers are often enough, but on a freezing January morning every layer is in use and each does its own job. Together, they make up the Svala AIR System™ layering system, in which every garment has its own place.

Zero Layer – Next-to-skin performance

In the morning you get dressed in a warm hallway based on how it looks outside. The first few minutes feel chilly, but soon you're too warm. If you carry your things in a rucksack, your shirt gets wet on your back first. Even so, the biggest sweat often comes only when you arrive: once you walk in from the bike shed, there's no wind to dry your skin and your body keeps warming up for a while.

That's why an Airbase set goes next to your skin. Airbase is 100% polypropylene, which doesn't absorb moisture but moves it away from your skin to the next layer. The loops of the 120 g/m² 3D mesh knit trap air in a thin layer on your skin. The longer back hem keeps your lower back covered in the riding position too.

Airbase has a silver-ion treatment in the core of the fibre, so the shirt doesn't start to smell and you can freshen it up simply by airing it.

“My current favourite is the Merino Extreme hoodie. It's really comfortable to wear thanks to its relaxed fit. And the hood isn't just for show: on cool mornings when I'm cycling to work, it's been great to pull it up under my helmet to protect my head.”

Base Layer – Temperature regulation

When the weather turns cooler, moisture transport alone isn't enough. Over Airbase goes a Merino Extreme base layer set. In its double-layer construction, the polypropylene on the inside moves moisture onward and the merino wool on the outside insulates. Merino wool absorbs moisture into the fibre and releases it gradually, so it evens out the temperature on your skin and doesn't feel wet straight away.

The same shirt works on a chilly morning and on a warm ride home, and you don't feel stifled as the day warms up. When you sweat heavily, even merino gets damp, and that's exactly why Airbase goes underneath.

For commuters, merino's big advantage is that it resists odour. Its natural antibacterial properties keep the shirt fresh, so you can wear the same set several days in a row, unlike many technical fibres.

Mid Layer – Thermal insulation

When the frost gets harder or you're riding at an easy pace, a temperature-regulating layer is no longer enough. Over the merino goes an insulating layer that adds warmth when your body can't produce enough on its own. This is where Svala's Polartec Alpha™ hoodie comes into its own.

Polartec Alpha™ is a technical insulation developed specifically for active movement. Its raised fibres and breathable mesh core regulate warmth and move moisture, so the layer insulates without feeling stifling. In practice, you can keep the hoodie on for the whole commute without sweating through, even when you pick up the pace. That's exactly what sets it apart from an ordinary mid-layer that has to come off on the first climb.

For cycle commuters, weight and packability are what count. The hoodie weighs very little and packs down small, so it travels unnoticed in your bag or rucksack and is ready as soon as the weather turns cooler. In milder weather and at a brisk pace you can leave this layer out, and bring it along as winter approaches.

Shell Layer – Weather protection

Riding creates its own headwind even on a still day, and along the waterfront or between buildings it easily picks up. In autumn, a shower often catches you halfway, and the wet road sprays up from the back wheel onto your back and trouser legs. Inside a rain jacket you can still sweat yourself just as wet as without one, and arrive as damp as if you'd ridden in the rain.

Cycle commuters have many opinions on shells. Some rely on a waterproof membrane jacket and rain trousers or a rain cape. Others choose a breathable shell and accept that getting a little wet on a short ride doesn't matter.

Svala's own Shell Layer, the Ventile 200, is a membrane-free jacket made from very tightly woven long-staple cotton. When it gets wet, the fibres swell and the weave tightens, so the fabric repels light rain and showers, yet breathes without a membrane. For constant heavy rain, a technical waterproof shell and rain trousers are more practical. As Ventile isn't just a cycling jacket, the same shell comes with you on other outdoor activities too.

You do not need everything at once – start here

The system works best when you put on layers according to the weather and your pace, but you don't need to buy everything at once or replace your whole wardrobe. AIR System™ also works with the clothes you already have. If you're starting from scratch, start with the layers next to your skin: they're the most important part of the whole system. The surest foundation for cycle commuters is Airbase mesh knit next to your skin with merino over it. On top of these, add the Mid Layer and Shell Layer to suit the weather and the ride.

If you already have one layer sorted, just get what's missing:

  • Already have a merino wool base layer? Complete it with Airbase: wear the mesh layer next to your skin under the merino, and you'll arrive drier than with merino alone.
  • Airbase and merino already sorted? For freezing winter days, add the Polartec Alpha™ hoodie, which packs down small.
  • Already have a cycling jacket that works? There's no need to replace it. Make sure the other layers fit loosely underneath, as the air space between the layers is part of the warmth.

This way, you can build a system that works at your own pace. Although we put these layers together for cycle commuting, they won't just sit in your wardrobe: the same clothes work for leisure rides, hiking and other outdoor activities all year round.
