“Choosing the wrong socks backfired one perch fishing weekend, when I forgot to put liner socks under my merino socks. After a kilometre I had a nasty blister on my heel, and the whole competition was in jeopardy.”

Aino Hynnä and Anna Virolainen-Hynnä, members of the Finnish national fly fishing team

Performance Liner – socks you forget as soon as you put them on

Performance Liner merino wool socks answer an age-old question for active people: how to keep your feet dry and comfortable all year round as the weather and your pace change. Merino wool is nature’s own smart material. It evens out temperature changes and keeps you warm even when slightly damp. The thin, light knit is so unobtrusive that you can wear these socks on their own or under another pair without your shoes feeling tight.

Merino wool does not absorb sweat the way cotton does. Instead, it wicks moisture away from the skin and dries quickly. In practice, your feet stay dry inside your shoes and sweat less, so your socks do not feel clammy, even after a long day. Just a dry, light feeling that lets you focus on something other than your feet.

Merino wool is naturally odour-resistant, so when you take your socks off at the end of the day, you are not greeted by that familiar end-of-day smell. Instead, they feel fresh. On long trips, you can often freshen up merino socks by airing them – a big advantage when washing is not an option.

Performance Liner merino socks come with a 100-day satisfaction guarantee. We want you to have time to try the socks properly: wear them as normal for 100 days. If you are not satisfied with them for any reason, you will get your money back.

Professionally tested Performance Liner merino wool socks for every situation

A snug fit keeps the socks on your feet, so they do not slip down to your ankles or twist inside your shoes during the day. No more socks that slip off or need a second thought. The reinforced heel and toe stand up to wear where your foot presses against the shoe and socks wear out first. This makes the socks durable and long-lasting.

The seamless toe is at the heart of these socks. There is no seam over your toes to rub or press inside your shoe, so you will not feel that familiar pressure point on top of your big toe, even after a long day. It is a small detail you only notice when it is missing.

Thanks to its thin construction, Performance Liner works in two ways. In summer heat, it is a light, breathable sock on its own. In the cold, it slips under a thicker sock as a liner: the inner layer wicks moisture away from the skin, and the outer sock provides the warmth. For warm, dry feet in cold weather, pair it with Performance Extra Warm socks, for example. Performance Liner merino socks are suitable for daily use all year round – for running, hiking, work and everyday life. They fit easily into any shoe.

In Svala AIR System™ layering, Performance Liner belongs to the Accessories range, which complements the main layers. While the Zero Layer and Base Layer manage moisture and warmth around your body, merino wool socks complete the system by keeping your feet warm and dry. A warm body needs warm feet too.

Thoughts from the designer

“Thin socks are underrated. They are not the warmest socks, but they decide whether your feet feel dry and comfortable all day. I wanted to make a sock that works both on its own and under another sock: thin, breathable and so unobtrusive that you forget you are wearing it. A good sock is not one you notice during the day, but one you forget as soon as you put it on.”

Ninni Pohto, designer at Svala

Materials with a purpose

Performance Liner merino socks are made from a soft merino wool blend: 61% merino wool, 37% polyamide and 2% elastane. Merino wool provides warmth, breathability and natural odour resistance. Polyamide adds durability, especially at the reinforced heel and toe, and elastane adds stretch that keeps the socks snugly in place.

Merino wool is naturally excellent at regulating temperature and moisture: it keeps you warm even when damp, wicks moisture away from the skin and evens out temperature changes. Long-fibre merino wool does not itch like ordinary wool, so the socks feel soft even on sensitive skin and when worn as a thin liner under another sock.

We recommend washing merino wool socks before you wear them for the first time, so they fit true to size. Please note that merino wool socks may shrink slightly in the wash. Reshape and stretch them firmly while still damp to restore their original size.

Frequently asked questions about the product

What is a liner sock, and why would I wear one sock under another?

A liner sock is a thin sock worn under a thicker one. Its job is to wick moisture away from your skin, while the thicker outer sock provides the warmth. This keeps your feet drier and warmer than a single thick sock would.

Two socks also reduce chafing: the socks slide against each other instead of one sock rubbing against your skin. Performance Liner is designed for exactly this – thin, breathable and seamless, so it doesn't make your shoes feel tight. Pair Performance Liner with the Performance Extra Warm sock, for example, to keep your feet warm and dry in cold weather.

Can you wear Performance Liner on its own, or is it only a liner sock?

Both. Performance Liner works brilliantly as a liner under a thicker sock, but it is also designed to be worn on its own. The thin, breathable knit makes it a comfortable sock for hot summer days, and merino wool regulates temperature so your feet don't get too warm. So the same sock covers two needs: a thin everyday sock in summer and a liner sock in winter. This versatility is exactly what makes it an easy choice for year-round wear.

Is a thin merino sock hard-wearing?

Yes. The heel and toe – the parts of a sock that wear out first – are reinforced with polyamide for added durability. Merino wool provides comfort and temperature regulation, while polyamide makes sure the sock stands up to daily wear and washing for a long time. So a thin sock doesn't mean a weak sock.

Merino wool socks may pill slightly over time where they rub. This is natural for wool, and you can remove the pills with a fabric shaver if needed.

Do the socks get clean at a low washing temperature?

Yes. The socks get clean even at a low temperature, as long as you use a good-quality detergent and a suitable wash programme. A high temperature is needed less often than people think – dirt and microbes come out well on a delicates cycle too, as long as the detergent does its job.

The recommended washing temperature is based on the merino wool in the socks. Wool fibres shrink, felt and get damaged easily in a hot wash, so a lower temperature isn't just enough – it's also the right way to keep your socks in good condition for longer. Besides merino wool, the socks contain other fibres that could handle a hotter wash, but it's best to care for the whole sock according to its most delicate fibre: the wool.

Merino wool also helps keep itself clean: it naturally resists odour, and its ability to repel dirt keeps the socks fresher for longer. In practice, this means you need to wash the socks less often, and a low washing temperature is usually more than enough.
