“I bought two in different colours before Christmas, and this beanie has turned out to be absolutely amazing! I wear it every day – the only tricky part is choosing the colour…”

1955 – the beanie you forget you’re wearing

The 1955 merino wool beanie solves a problem familiar to us all: how to keep your head warm without it itching, or sweat running into your eyes, as soon as you come indoors. Merino wool is nature’s own smart material. It keeps you warm even when it’s slightly damp and evens out changes in temperature, so your head stays comfortable both outside in freezing weather and in warm rooms indoors. The soft knit is barely noticeable on your skin and doesn’t itch or feel tight across your forehead.

Merino wool breathes and wicks moisture away from the skin, so your head doesn’t get sweaty, even when you pick up the pace or go from the cold into the warm. No sweaty, itchy beanie you have to pull off as soon as you step indoors. Just a warm, dry, soft feel that lets you keep it on.

Merino wool is naturally odour-resistant, so the beanie stays fresh for a long time and rarely needs washing. Often, airing it is all it needs. When you take the beanie off after a long day, it feels just as fresh as it did in the morning.

The 1955 merino wool beanie comes with a 100-day satisfaction guarantee. We want to give you time to try the beanie: wear it as you normally would for 100 days. If you’re not satisfied with it for any reason, you’ll get your money back.

1955 merino wool beanie for every occasion

The timeless, simple design fits comfortably without feeling tight or slipping down over your eyes. The wide turn-up and rounded crown give the beanie structure and leave some room to adjust: fold the turn-up higher or lower, depending on whether you want to cover your ears completely or wear the beanie more loosely. Note that the faux leather patch limits the adjustment somewhat. The 1955 is one size fits most, so it fits almost every adult.

The faux leather patch on the turn-up is a small detail with a big story. It reads “Svala 1955” – the year Svala was founded. This beanie is an updated version of the traditional Svala 1955 beanie: the same classic, now with a wider turn-up and a rounder crown. It works well in town and in the countryside, but in the spirit of Jacques Cousteau, it’s perhaps best of all at sea. Wear it and you carry a small piece of Svala’s history with you.

The 1955 merino wool beanie works for everyday wear and outdoor activities, in town and out in nature. Orange, black, ochre and red give the beanie plenty of character, and they’re easy to pair with any outfit, whether you’re heading to work, out for a run or down to the jetty.

Thoughts from the designer

“A beanie is a small garment, but it’s often the first thing you grab on your way out of the door. I wanted to update Svala’s classic beanie so that it feels familiar but fits even better: a wider turn-up, a rounder crown and soft merino wool that doesn’t itch or make you sweat. The ‘Svala 1955’ patch on the turn-up is a reminder of where it all began in 1955.”

Ninni Pohto, designer at Svala

Merino wool – nature’s own smart material

The 1955 merino wool beanie is made from 100 per cent mulesing-free merino wool. No blends, no fillers – just soft, warm wool that feels gentle against the skin. Because merino wool naturally resists odour, the beanie stays fresh for a long time and rarely needs washing – often, a good airing is enough.

Merino wool is naturally excellent at regulating temperature and moisture: it keeps you warm even when damp, wicks moisture away from the skin and evens out changes in temperature. Your head stays warm in freezing weather but doesn’t sweat when it’s warmer. Long-fibre merino wool doesn’t itch like ordinary wool, so the beanie feels soft even directly on the skin and on sensitive foreheads.

The beanie’s material is OEKO-TEX 100 certified, which ensures it’s safe for skin contact. The 1955 merino wool beanie is made in Finland by Nevertex from responsibly produced merino wool, with decades of experience behind it.

Developed in Finland for Finnish weather

Heading to work on freezing mornings? Spending your weekends outdoors or on the water, whatever the weather? Looking for a beanie that doesn’t itch or make you sweat? The 1955 is made for moments like these.

Svala’s merino products suit almost any kind of exercise, everyday use or leisure activity. Enjoying the outdoors no longer depends on your kit.

Where the 1955 merino wool beanie is at its best:

  • On shift
  • On your commute and in everyday life
  • Around town
  • On walks and runs
  • Outdoors
  • On hikes and at the cottage
  • On board and on the jetty
  • At sea and on the water
  • On freezing days and cool summer evenings

Svala’s merino products are developed in Finland and have been tested in professional use for decades. That means they’ve been put to the test by people who are hard on their clothes: on long shifts, on week-long wilderness trips, and in wet, cold conditions where your kit decides how comfortable the day is. If the beanie can survive them, it can survive you too.

Frequently asked questions about the product

How does the 1955 merino wool beanie differ from the Paanu merino wool beanie?

Paanu and 1955 are both made in Finland from 100% merino wool and share the same merino benefits: warmth, breathability and wool that doesn't itch. The difference lies above all in their look and their story:

  • 1955 is an updated version of Svala's classic beanie. It has a double turn-up, a rounded crown and a “Svala 1955” patch on the turn-up, a nod to the year the company was founded. The colours are orange, black, ochre and red.
  • Paanu has a more minimalist look in marl colours, and the patch on its turn-up shows Kärsämäki Shingle Church.

Choose your beanie based on which look and story speak to you more. The comfort and features are the same in both.

How does the updated 1955 beanie differ from the previous model?

1955 is an updated version of Svala's traditional 1955 beanie. It is the same classic design, but it has been fine-tuned for a better fit: the turn-up is wider and the crown is rounder.

In practice, the beanie fits more comfortably than before and looks more polished, but the familiar spirit and the “Svala 1955” patch remain. If you have the previous version, the new one will feel familiar straight away.

Does one size really fit everyone?

The 1955 merino wool beanie is one size fits most: a single size that fits most adult heads. The merino wool knit stretches and adapts to the shape of your head, so the beanie sits comfortably on both smaller and larger heads without feeling tight or loose. Thanks to the wide turn-up, you can also adjust how low you wear it: with your ears fully covered or more loosely on top of your head. Please note that the faux leather patch limits how much you can adjust the beanie to some extent.

Merino wool changes a little with wear, and it's easy to bring back into shape. If the beanie feels slightly stretched over time, dampen it, reshape it by hand and let it dry flat – if needed, a gentle wash or steaming will also restore its shape. If the beanie feels a little too tight, you can dampen it and gently stretch it a bit looser. This way, you can get the beanie to fit your head perfectly.

Does the 1955 merino wool beanie keep the wind out?

To some extent. The double turn-up adds an extra layer of knit over your ears and forehead and blocks some of the wind, but 1955 is a merino wool beanie, not a windproof shell hat, so it has no separate windproof membrane.
