Performance Warm – socks you forget as soon as you put them on

Performance Warm merino wool socks solve a cold-season problem: how to keep your feet warm when they are constantly warming up and cooling down. Merino wool is nature’s own smart material. It keeps you warm even when slightly damp and evens out temperature changes, so your feet stay comfortable whether you are on the move or standing still. The durable four-layer construction adds warmth and cushioning exactly where your feet need it.

Merino wool does not absorb sweat the way cotton does. Instead, it wicks moisture away from the skin. The polypropylene in the blend makes it wick moisture even better, so your feet stay dry even when you pick up the pace. No wet socks going cold – just a dry, warm feeling that lets you focus on something other than your feet.

Merino wool is naturally odour-resistant, so when you take your socks off at the end of the day, you are not greeted by that familiar end-of-day smell. Instead, they feel almost as fresh as when you put them on. On long trips, you can often freshen up merino socks by airing them – a big advantage when washing is not an option.

Performance Warm merino socks come with a 100-day satisfaction guarantee. We want you to have time to try the socks properly: wear them as normal for 100 days. If you are not satisfied with them for any reason, you will get your money back.

Professionally tested Performance Warm merino wool socks for every situation

A snug fit keeps the sock on your foot, so it does not slip down to your ankle or twist inside your shoe during the day. Light compression at the arch and above the ankle supports your foot and keeps the sock firmly in place, even when you are on the move. No more socks that slip off or need a second thought.

The durable four-layer construction is at the heart of these socks. Built from several knitted layers, the sock adds cushioning and warmth where your foot meets the shoe and stands up to wear far better than a thin sock. The foot section contains soft, temperature-regulating merino wool that feels good against your skin all day. The toe seam is flat and unobtrusive, so you will not feel that familiar pressure point on top of your big toe, even after a long day. It is a small detail you only notice when it is missing.

Thin and warm can go together too. Performance Warm works on its own as a warm sock in cold weather, or you can slip a thin Performance Liner sock underneath: the inner sock wicks moisture away from the skin, and Performance Warm provides the warmth. This keeps your feet warm and dry even on the longest freezing days. Performance Warm merino socks are suitable for the cold season – for work, hiking, running and everyday life from autumn to spring.

In Svala AIR System™ layering, Performance Warm belongs to the Accessories range, which complements the main layers. While the Zero Layer and Base Layer manage moisture and warmth around your body, merino wool socks complete the system by keeping your feet warm and dry. A warm body needs warm feet too.

Thoughts from the designer

“A warm sock has to be more than just thick. If a sock makes your feet sweat, they get cold as soon as you stop. I wanted to make a sock where the four-layer construction provides warmth and softness, while merino wool and polypropylene still keep your feet dry. Light support at the arch keeps the sock in place, so you do not have to think about it. A good sock is not one you notice during the day, but one you forget as soon as you put it on.”

Ninni Pohto, designer at Svala

Materials with a purpose

Performance Warm merino socks are made from a soft merino wool blend: 63% merino wool, 25% polyamide, 10% polypropylene and 2% elastane. Merino wool provides warmth, breathability and natural odour resistance, polypropylene improves moisture wicking, polyamide adds durability, and elastane adds stretch that keeps the sock firmly in place.

The four-layer construction combines the best properties of these materials in one sock: warmth, moisture wicking and durability.

Merino wool is naturally excellent at regulating temperature and moisture: it keeps you warm even when damp, wicks moisture away from the skin and evens out temperature changes. Long-fibre merino wool does not itch like ordinary wool, so the socks feel soft even on sensitive skin.

The merino wool in these socks is NATIVA™-certified, which means it is traceable and responsibly produced on mulesing-free farms. All materials meet the OEKO-TEX 100 standard, which guarantees the product is safe for skin contact.

We recommend washing merino wool socks before you wear them for the first time, so they fit true to size. Please note that merino wool socks may shrink slightly in the wash. Reshape and stretch them firmly while still damp to restore their original size. The socks are made in Finland by Sukkamestarit, using responsibly produced merino wool and decades of experience.

Frequently asked questions about the product

How does the Performance Warm merino wool sock differ from the Performance Liner merino wool sock?

Performance Warm and Performance Liner belong to the same Performance family, but they are designed for different jobs:

  • Performance Warm is a warm, four-layer sock for the cold season. It provides warmth and softness and works both on its own and as the thicker sock over Liner.
  • Performance Liner is a thin liner sock that wicks moisture away from your skin and can also be worn on its own in summer.

In cold weather, you get the best result by combining both socks: Liner next to your skin to wick moisture and Warm on top to provide warmth. This keeps your feet both warm and dry, even on long days in hard frost.

Will a four-layer sock fit into a normal shoe?

Performance Warm is a warm sock, so it is thicker than a thin everyday sock, but it is designed to fit normal footwear. The four-layer construction adds softness and warmth without making the sock bulky.

If you wear the sock with tight-fitting shoes, bear in mind that a thicker sock takes up more room than a thin one. In winter footwear and sturdy shoes, this is usually not a problem, and that is where a warm sock really comes into its own.

Why does a warm merino sock contain polypropylene?

Polypropylene is a fibre that doesn't absorb moisture but moves it on efficiently. In the sock, it boosts merino wool's natural moisture-wicking properties: merino already moves moisture and keeps you warm even when it is slightly damp, and polypropylene takes this even further. Together, they keep your feet even drier.

This matters most in a warm, thick sock, which collects more moisture than a thin one. The more efficiently moisture moves away from your skin, the drier and fresher the sock feels, even after a long day – and your feet won't feel clammy when you pick up the pace. The sock also dries faster, which is an advantage on long trips.

Do the socks get clean at a low washing temperature?

Yes. The socks get clean even at a low temperature, as long as you use a good-quality detergent and a suitable wash programme. A high temperature is needed less often than people think – dirt and microbes come out well on a delicates cycle too, as long as the detergent does its job.

The recommended washing temperature is based on the merino wool in the socks. Wool fibres shrink, felt and get damaged easily in a hot wash, so a lower temperature isn't just enough – it's also the right way to keep your socks in good condition for longer. Besides merino wool, the socks contain other fibres that could handle a hotter wash, but it's best to care for the whole sock according to its most delicate fibre: the wool.

Merino wool also does its part: it naturally resists odour, and its ability to repel dirt keeps the socks fresher for longer. In practice, this means you need to wash the socks less often, and a low washing temperature is usually more than enough.
