Raita merino wool socks are made from a soft merino wool blend: 63% mulesing-free merino wool, 35% polyamide and 2% elastane. Merino wool provides warmth, breathability and natural odour resistance, polyamide adds durability, and elastane adds stretch that keeps the socks in shape day after day.

Merino wool is naturally excellent at regulating temperature and moisture: it keeps you warm even when damp, wicks moisture away from the skin and evens out temperature changes. Long-fibre merino wool does not itch like ordinary wool, so the socks feel soft even on sensitive skin.

The merino wool in these socks is NATIVA™-certified, which means it is traceable and responsibly produced on mulesing-free farms. All materials meet the OEKO-TEX 100 standard, which guarantees the product is safe for skin contact.

The sizing allows for shrinkage. We recommend washing your merino wool socks before you wear them for the first time, so they fit true to size. The socks are made in Finland by Sukkamestarit, using responsibly produced merino wool and decades of experience.

Frequently asked questions about the product

Why do you recommend washing the socks before wearing them for the first time?

The sock sizes allow for a small amount of shrinkage, so we recommend washing the socks once before you wear them for the first time. After this first wash, the socks match their stated size best and fit your feet just right.

Shrinkage is normal for merino wool products and doesn't mean the socks will keep shrinking uncontrollably as you wear them. The first wash simply brings them to their final size. After that, the socks keep their shape with normal wear and washing.

Are thin merino wool socks warm enough?

Raita is a thin merino wool sock designed for everyday wear, not a thick winter sock. Thanks to merino wool, it is clearly warmer than a cotton sock of the same thickness and stays warm even when your feet sweat. It works well in autumn, in spring and on ordinary winter days with normal footwear.

For hard frosts or long days outdoors, we recommend a thicker merino wool sock. Raita's strength is precisely that it is thin: it fits into any shoe and feels comfortable all day without your feet feeling cramped.

Can Raita merino wool socks be machine washed?

Yes. We recommend washing the socks on your machine's wool or delicates cycle at 30 °C. Use a laundry bag so the socks keep their shape for longer. Also remember to wash them once before you wear them for the first time.

Does merino wool itch?

No. At least not like ordinary wool. Raita merino wool socks are made from soft, long-fibre merino wool that doesn't itch the way ordinary wool does. Long fibres mean there are no loose fibre ends poking against your skin, which is the main reason ordinary wool itches.

Merino wool is a natural fibre, so people with very sensitive skin may notice it – but for most people merino feels soft and comfortable, including those who haven't been able to wear wool socks before. Do the socks get clean at a low washing temperature?

Yes. The socks get clean even at a low temperature, as long as you use a good-quality detergent and a suitable wash programme. A high temperature is needed less often than people think – dirt and microbes come out well on a delicates cycle too, as long as the detergent does its job.

The recommended washing temperature is based on the merino wool in the socks. Wool fibres shrink, felt and get damaged easily in a hot wash, so a lower temperature isn't just enough – it's also the right way to keep your socks in good condition for longer. Besides merino wool, the socks contain other fibres that could handle a hotter wash, but it's best to care for the whole sock according to its most delicate fibre: the wool.

Merino wool also does its part: it naturally resists odour, and its ability to repel dirt keeps the socks fresher for longer. In practice, this means you need to wash the socks less often, and a low washing temperature is usually more than enough.
